As Fire Chief, Robert Hutto is often ahead of the department’s larger apparatus. That puts him in a unique position: he may be the first person to see exactly what crews are dealing with, but a traditional chief’s truck isn’t built to put water on a fire.
The challenge wasn’t replacing a pumper. It was filling the gap between Chief Hutto’s arrival and the arrival of the engine.
Those first few minutes can matter. A small fire can grow, a vehicle fire can intensify, and a manageable situation can quickly demand more resources. Chief Hutto wanted a way to carry meaningful suppression capability in the vehicle he already responds in every day—without turning it into another full-size fire apparatus.

Chief Robert Hutto carries his BLZ Ranger 60 in the back of his chief’s truck on a slide-out system, giving him immediate access to water and hose the moment he gets on scene.
When this pickup caught fire outside a local business, that setup proved exactly why he wanted it.
Chief Hutto arrived ahead of the department’s pumper, deployed the Ranger 60, and went straight to work on the fire. Instead of waiting for the first engine to arrive, he was already applying water, slowing the fire’s progress, and beginning the knockdown.
For a chief who is regularly one of the first units on scene, the Ranger 60 gives him something a normal command vehicle does not: the ability to take immediate action when the situation calls for it.
